Overview

About the Role

The primary responsibility of the Outpatient Coder I is to review medical records related to clinic visits, radiology reports, laboratory requisitions, and other assigned diagnostic reports. This role involves determining the correct Evaluation and Management (E/M) level for clinic visits and assigning appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes, as applicable to each encounter.

 

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Reviews medical records for outpatient services, including:

    • Clinic visits

    • Radiology reports

    • Laboratory requisitions

    • Other diagnostic tests and reports, as assigned

  • Accurately determines and assigns:

    • Evaluation and Management (E/M) visit charges for clinic encounters

    • ICD-10 diagnosis codes

    • CPT procedure codes, when applicable

  • Ensures coding accuracy and compliance with applicable guidelines to support proper billing and documentation

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

Required:

  • 1–2 years of medical records or outpatient coding experience (technical and hospital) required

  • Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) senior students or recent graduates may be considered in lieu of experience

  • Strong knowledge required in:

    • Medical terminology

    • Anatomy and physiology

    • Disease processes

    • Coding Clinic guidelines

    • Outpatient ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding principles and guidelines

  • Experience with the following is a plus:

    • Encoder software (e.g., Clintegrity 360)

    • Electronic medical record (EMR) systems

  • Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities effectively

  • Must be fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Highly detail-oriented, accurate, organized, and capable of working independently

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially:

    • Excel

    • Outlook

    • Shared file management

  • Must have basic computer literacy and internet navigation skills

  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends as needed

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

The expected salary range for this position is [$29.31 - $30.70] per hour, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
