About the Role
The primary responsibility of the Outpatient Coder I is to review medical records related to clinic visits, radiology reports, laboratory requisitions, and other assigned diagnostic reports. This role involves determining the correct Evaluation and Management (E/M) level for clinic visits and assigning appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes, as applicable to each encounter.
What You’ll Do
Reviews medical records for outpatient services, including:
Clinic visits
Radiology reports
Laboratory requisitions
Other diagnostic tests and reports, as assigned
Accurately determines and assigns:
Evaluation and Management (E/M) visit charges for clinic encounters
ICD-10 diagnosis codes
CPT procedure codes, when applicable
Ensures coding accuracy and compliance with applicable guidelines to support proper billing and documentation
What You’ll Bring
Required:
1–2 years of medical records or outpatient coding experience (technical and hospital) required
Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) senior students or recent graduates may be considered in lieu of experience
Strong knowledge required in:
Medical terminology
Anatomy and physiology
Disease processes
Coding Clinic guidelines
Outpatient ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding principles and guidelines
Experience with the following is a plus:
Encoder software (e.g., Clintegrity 360)
Electronic medical record (EMR) systems
Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities effectively
Must be fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills
Highly detail-oriented, accurate, organized, and capable of working independently
Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially:
Excel
Outlook
Shared file management
Must have basic computer literacy and internet navigation skills
May be required to work evenings and/or weekends as needed
What We Offer
Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)
The expected salary range for this position is [$29.31 - $30.70] per hour, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
