About the Role

The Flight Nurse is responsible for delivering and coordinating both Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS and ALS), as well as in-hospital care, to critically ill or injured patients of all ages and backgrounds. Operating in all weather conditions, the Flight Nurse works collaboratively with the patient care team under the guidance of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP) and the supervision of the Chief Flight Nurse or Air Medical Coordinator. Duties include performing patient assessments, providing appropriate treatment, and safely lifting, moving, and transporting patients using specialized equipment and techniques. The role also involves completing all required documentation and additional tasks that support the effectiveness of EMS operations, while consistently representing University Hospital and EMS in a professional and respectful manner.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Provides and coordinates both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) for critically ill or injured patients

  • Delivers in-hospital and pre-hospital care to patients of all ages and diverse backgrounds

  • Operates in various weather and environmental conditions to ensure timely and safe patient care

  • Collaborates with the patient care team under the direction of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP)

  • Works under the supervision of the Chief Flight Nurse or Air Medical Coordinator

  • Performs thorough patient assessments and administers appropriate medical interventions

  • Safely lifts, moves, and transports patients using specialized equipment and proper techniques

  • Completes all required documentation accurately and promptly

  • Carries out additional duties that support efficient EMS operations

  • Represents University Hospital and EMS with professionalism, compassion, and integrity

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

Required:

    • Education & Experience Requirements:

      • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of New Jersey

      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

      • Minimum of three (3) years of critical care nursing experience in an ICU or Emergency Department OR at least six (6) months of prior Flight Nurse experience required

      • One (1) year of pre-hospital Advanced Life Support (ALS) experience preferred

      • Two (2) years of EMS driving experience with a satisfactory driving record preferred

      • Must pass a medical evaluation and respirator fit test

      • Must be able to wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards

      • Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred

      Required Credentials & Certifications:

      • Valid NJ RN license

      • One of the following certifications (must be maintained unless CFRN is obtained):

        • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)

        • Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN)

        • Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN)

        • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)

      • CFRN/NJ Flight Nurse (NJ FN) and MICN/MICP certifications must be obtained prior to the end of the probationary period and maintained without interruption

        • Once CFRN certification is obtained, other listed certifications are not required to be maintained

      • Valid driver’s license with NJ driving privileges in accordance with DOT/MVC regulations for assigned vehicle type

      • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for the Healthcare Provider

      • AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider

      • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider OR

        • Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals – Advanced (PEPP-A) Provider OR

        • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) Provider

      • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Provider OR

        • Basic or International Trauma Life Support (BTLS or ITLS) Provider OR

        • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) Provider

      • Incident Command System (ICS) Level 100

      • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Awareness (FEMA IS-700 or equivalent)

 

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

The expected salary for this position is ($50.00) per hour, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
