Overview

The primary purpose of the Staff Nurse, Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES) position is to administer total patient care based on individualized needs of assigned patients and families in accordance with professional nursing standards. The Staff Nurse will utilize knowledge of diabetes to assess, screen, evaluate, educate, and provide care management/outcome management in accordance with professional nursing standards to pediatric patients who are under the care of the Outpatient care team. Provides patient care and diabetes education in various clinics as assigned. Shows a working knowledge of UH, Joint Commission & DOH regulations. Participates in evidence based nursing and related QA and PI endeavors.

Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist Duties:

  • Works in collaboration with all disciplines to identify patient diabetes education activities.
  • Designs and manages up-to-date resource and patient education materials.
  • Works with other health educators at University Hospital in an effort to promote health care by providing consultation, guidance and in-service programs related to diabetes education. Engages in community events to disseminate information and education and recruit new patients.

RN Clinical Duties:

  • Independently obtains health histories and provides assessments or screenings as indicated on selected patient population as outlined in the nursing standards.
  • Provides direct patient care or directs other health team members to ensure proper implementation of medical/nursing plan of care.
  • Administers and monitors medication in accordance with established UH and ACC policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) required or must be obtained within one (1) year of employment. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a current license to practice in the State of New Jersey required. BSN preferred. BLS required. Hospital nursing experience preferred. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, good public speaking/group facilitation skills, and be an effective communicator with diverse groups of people, including community-based organizations. Must be highly organized and have strong attention to detail. Must have working knowledge of diabetes technology. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend hours.

 

Credential required: Professional Registered Nurse in the State of NJ, BLS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires using hands to finger, handle, or feel 1/3 of the time. Requires standing and/or walking 1/3 of the
time.

 

Work Environment: Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Exposure to blood borne
pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment. Position involves working with chemotherapy and associated medications
over 2/3 of the time.
