About the Role
The EMS Dispatcher EMT is responsible for answering and triaging emergency and non-emergency calls using the Medical Priority Dispatch System and Fire Service Communications System. This role involves collecting and processing critical information, providing pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions, and coordinating the deployment of appropriate resources. The Dispatcher ensures communication efficiency and responder safety under the supervision of an EMS Communications Supervisor. This position may function within the communications center or in the field, completing all required documentation and supporting EMS operations while representing University Hospital and EMS in a professional and positive manner.
What You’ll Do
Answers and triages emergency and non-emergency calls using the Medical Priority Dispatch System and Fire Service Communications System
Collects, verifies, and processes essential caller information quickly and accurately
Provides pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to callers as appropriate
Dispatches and coordinates EMS resources to ensure timely and appropriate response
Monitors all communications to maintain operational efficiency and ensure the safety of responding units
Operates under the supervision of an EMS Communications Supervisor
Performs duties in both the communications center and field settings, as needed
Completes all required reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner
Supports the overall efficiency of EMS operations through effective communication and coordination
Represents University Hospital and EMS in a professional, courteous, and positive manner at all times
What You’ll Bring
Experience & Skills Requirements:
Minimum of two (2) years of EMS experience required
At least one (1) year of public safety dispatching experience preferred
Spanish-speaking ability is desirable
Must pass a medical evaluation and respirator fit test, and be able to wear an N95 mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards
Credential Requirements (must be current, active, and in good standing):
Required Certifications:
NJ Basic Telecommunicator Certification
NJ Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification or an equivalent certification approved by EMS Department Management
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification from one of the following:
National Registry
NJ, PA, NY, DE, MD, VA, WV, DC, or any Atlantic EMS Council member state
OR NJ Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic (MICP) or Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) certification
American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers
ICS Level 100 Certification
NIMS Awareness Certification
Additional Certification Requirements:
NJ EMT reciprocity must be obtained within six (6) months of hire
Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire
Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)
The expected salary range for this position is [ $25.55] per hour, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
