Overview

About the Role

The Section Head Ophthalmology position has direct patient care duties and administrative duties. Performs ophthalmic imaging techniques to include photography-based studies, optical coherence tomography, ophthalmic ultrasound and electro physiologic studies. Plans, organizes and directs the day-to-day activities and functions related to the clinical, fiscal, and administrative functions of the Division of Ophthalmic Imaging. Provides administrative services and support to department management for the Division. Assist in the development and implementation of policies and operating guidelines of the division. Assists in other general office operation in the care of patient requiring Ophthalmology services from ages 0 to above 100 years.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do   

  • Oversees daily operations of Ophthalmology clinics, including staffing, room assignments, equipment maintenance, supply levels, and compliance with University Hospital standards.
  • Accomplishes, recommends, and/or participates in the selection, supervision, evaluation, discipline, and training of department Ophthalmic Assistants/Technicians. Ensures appropriate orientation, training, and validation of skills. Maintains personnel records.
  • Manages inventory of medical supplies and equipment, prepares purchase orders, identifies vendors for technical services. Participates in the long- and short-range selection and acquisition of medical equipment including operating budget and capital budget.
  • Ensures that all medical equipment is maintained for safe operation through liaison with the Biomedical Department and the maintenance of contracts with external vendors.
  • Assists in communication of University Hospital information to Faculty and Residents ensuring that they are prepared for Epic upgrades and cognizant of University Hospital policy and policy changes.
  • Researches and prepares special purpose and recurring reports at the direction of the Director and/or Chair.
  • Performs the skills of Ophthalmic medical personnel as outlined in the JCAHPO certification manual: basic and advanced level ophthalmic screening procedures as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), including but not limited to visual acuity; automated lensometry, refractometry, and keratometry; visual fields; optical coherence tomography (OCT); corneal topography; measurement of intraocular pressure.

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience performing ophthalmic photography is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 5-year supervisory experience and certification as an Ophthalmic technician.
  • Applicants should possess skill level in all skills of JCAHPO Ophthalmic Allied Personnel.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic disease presentations and diagnostic procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of computer imaging systems is required.
  • Equivalent education, experience, and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirements.

Compensation

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is SH/29C :: $42.62 - $52.32 - $62.02 per hour. University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs
