Overview

The primary purpose of the Palliative Care Coordinator position is to utilize expertise to provide bereavement services, palliative care, and spiritual support within University Hospital for patients who are dying and their families. Works collaboratively with the Advanced Practice Nurse for Ethic and Bereavement and with the Medical and Nursing Staffs of University Hospital to facilitate bereavement, spiritual support and palliative care that can serve as a model for other institutions. Assists in the gathering of data for research in end-of-life decision-making in collaboration with all health care disciplines. Facilitates bereavement support groups for families who experience the death of a loved one. Participates in staff development programs and patient/family education programs related to bereavement, end-of-life decision-making, patient rights, palliative care, and spiritual issues.

Qualifications

Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Nursing required. At least two (2) years of related experience in a hospice program, or an acute care setting required. Candidates must possess, or be eligible to sit for the next available certification exam for one of the following certifications: Thanatology Certification from the Association for Death Education & Counseling (ADEC), Hospice & Palliative Social Worker Certification (CHP-SW), Advanced Hospice & Palliative Social Worker Certification (ACHP-SW) from the National Association of Social Workers, Hospice & Palliative Nursing Certification (CHPN), Advanced Hospice & Palliative Nursing Certification (ACHPN) from the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN). Spanish speaking highly desirable. The Palliative Care Coordinator must be able to pass a medical evaluation and a respirator fit test and wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in accordance with PEOSHA standards as a condition of employment. Annual Respirator Fit Testing required.
