Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Investigational Drug Services

About the Role

The primary purpose of the Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Investigational Drug Services position is to assure proper handling and storage of investigational drugs is maintained in accordance with sponsor requirements, hospital policy, TJC, State and Federal standards, rules, and regulations. Organizes, leads, directs, and verifies the duties and functions performed by supportive personnel to ensure the provision of accurate, efficient, and appropriate Investigational Drug distribution services to the patient. Serves patients’ age and population as described below.

• Reviews all Investigational Drug Services (IDS) protocols, prepares protocol specific pharmacy manuals, and prepares policies and procedures for handling and control of Investigational drugs; maintains an accurate descriptive listing of all open drug trials at University Hospital where study drug is managed by IDS; responsible for complete and accurate record keeping of all investigational drugs received, stored, and dispensed according to requirements; reviews and assumes responsibility for accurate accountability of logs and storage for all investigational drugs.
• Responsible for invoicing the various departments utilizing the pharmacy services for handling of investigational drugs and ensuring proper payment is received; responsible for the preparation, proper labeling and distribution of investigational drugs managed by IDS as per study protocols; attends educational programs, initiation meetings and coordinate services with study monitors.
• Establishes methods for staff education, including medication dispensing, medication errors, and provision of clinical information as they pertain to IDS functions; reviews ADE and Med Watch reported to IRB by PI, as well as any other pertinent literature as it relates to IRB function; identifies, evaluates, and improves the quality of Investigational Drug Services provided by the Department of Pharmaceutical Services.
• Performs staffing responsibilities including order verification, checking medications, and other department related functions as required or assigned by Pharmacy Management; responsible for interpretation of prescriber medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness, informing them of any errors, omissions, or discrepancies and suggesting appropriate or alternate medication therapy to the physician.
• Responsible for training, overseeing, educating, and checking the work of supportive personnel and students; responsible for compounding and distribution of sterile products, including intravenous admixtures, total parenteral nutrition solutions, chemotherapy, and miscellaneous products as they relate to proper aseptic technique and USP <797> and <800> guidelines; responsible for compounding and distribution of non-sterile products, adhering to proper technique and procedures as established in USP <795> guidelines, Pharmacy policies and procedures and patient care needs.
• Responsible for the development, preparation, and compounding of special dosage forms of drugs not commercially available; responsible for the distribution, control and record keeping of all controlled substances as per hospital policy, law, and regulation; responsible for conducting in-service education lectures and providing patient education/counseling upon request; maintains and ensures quality control standards of the department by conducting medication usage evaluations (MUE), quality assurance (QA), and other programs.
• Responsible for intradepartmental communication by staff meeting and in-service attendance; maintains a working knowledge of the pharmacy policy and procedure manual; responsible for self-continuing education by attending conferences, meetings, and seminars; understands and adheres to University Hospital’s compliance standards; keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies; performs other related duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

Required:

• Bachelor of Science degree or Pharm D. degree in pharmacy from an accredited institution required. Post graduate degree preferred.
• Minimum of one (1) year experience as a registered pharmacist practicing in a hospital or industry setting.
• Experience in handling investigational drugs may substitute the experience as a registered pharmacist.
• Experience working in a hospital preferred. IRB experience preferred.
• Must be licensed with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacist.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

The expected salary range for this position is Min $129,497. – Mid $157,165 – Max $ 188,507 per year, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
